"Protected Districts" invites residents of Nizhny Novgorod and city guests to the "Shalyapin: Birth of an Artist" festival in August.
"The Reserved Quarters" NGO "ASIRIS" (Agency for the Preservation and Development of Objects of the Historical Environment of the Nizhny Novgorod Region) invites residents and visitors of Nizhny Novgorod to August cultural events taking place in the church of the Three Holy Scholars quarter. From August 21 to 24, the fifth musical and educational festival "Shalyapin. The Birth of an Artist" (6+) will be held, dedicated to the great opera singer. Guests will learn about Fedor Shalyapin's development as an artist, from a boy in a provincial church choir to a world-famous bass at the Metropolitan Opera. The program includes lectures on the maestro's creative journey, acting masterclasses for children, seminars for educators, a musical performance, and performances by opera soloists and a choir. "Shalyapin. The Birth of an Artist" is the anniversary fifth festival that continues to transform the Three Saints Quarter through rethinking the legacy of Fedor Shalyapin, one of the "geniuses of the place." It was here, on Gorky's balcony, that he once sang for residents of Nizhny Novgorod, and today we recreate this living tradition through open-air concerts, performances, and lectures. This season, we will showcase the creative path of the genius, from the documentary play "Windows into the Artist's Life" to a performance by a Mariinsky Theatre soloist. Additionally, in August, the quarter's visitors can enjoy jazz evenings, romances in the garden, and masterclasses that will turn the quarter into a true creative laboratory," said Ekaterina Kryunas, general director of NGO "ASIRIS."
The festival has been held in "The Reserved Quarters" since 2021 at various locations, including the balcony of the house at 11 Korolenko Street, where Maxim Gorky lived in 1900–1901. In 2025, the "Shalyapin. The Birth of an Artist" festival is supported by the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives.
