      Culture and Leisure

Nizhny Novgorod has long been a popular filming location due to its historic appearance, diverse architecture, and picturesque views. The city at the confluence of the Volga and Oka Rivers has repeatedly served as a backdrop for works by Nikita Mikhalkov, Alexei Balabanov, Yuri Bykov, and other well-known domestic directors.

On the day of the premiere of the series "Three Sisters" (18+) on the KION online cinema, we recall the most cinematic places in Nizhny Novgorod that appeared in famous films.

      Cable Car

In the new series "Three Sisters" by KION Originals, the action takes place in Nizhny. The city embankments, streets, cafes, and, of course, the cable car across the Volga are easily recognizable on screen. The main character, jewelry designer Tatyana (Larisa Guzeeva), returns from vacation with her young companion Nikita (Pavel Derevyanko). She decides to seriously pursue a personal life, but her daughters — Irina, Olga, and Masha — are skeptical. They think Nikita is not so simple as he seems. The girls were planning to move to Moscow but now decide to stay to be close to their mother and rely only on themselves.

      Fedorovsky Embankment

Alexei Balabanov's film "Perm" (18+) has become a real classic. In the crime comedy, the characters (Aleksei Panin and Dmitry Dyuzhev) cruise around the city in search of adventures. Big Pecherskaya Street, Vodnik Stadium, and the Church of Elijah the Prophet appear in the frame. But Fedorovsky Embankment is especially memorable — the viewing platform offers a view of the Volga, and in the film, it is here that the characters set an ambush.

      Bashkirov Mill

The crime thriller "Method" (18+) starring Konstantin Khabensky as investigator Rodion Meglin was also shot in Nizhny Novgorod. His apartment is located in an old merchant Bashkirov's mill on Chernigovskaya Street. Meglin unravels complex crimes working alone, while his intern Yesenia (Paulina Andreeva) hopes to solve the mystery of her mother’s death. The shot also features a grain elevator of a flour mill that was demolished in 2020.

      Bolshaya Pokrovskaya

In Gleb Panfilov's historical drama "Mother" (12+), based on the novel by Maxim Gorky, the streets of Nizhny Novgorod serve as a backdrop for pre-revolutionary Russia. Pavel (Viktor Rakov) becomes involved in revolutionary activities, and his mother Pelageya (Inna Churikova) becomes a symbol of awakening. Filming took place on Bolshaya Pokrovskaya, Rozhdestvenskaya, near the Dmitrievskaya Tower, and at the "Krasnoe Sormovo" factory. By the way, the film received awards at the Cannes Film Festival.

      Shchelokovsky Farmstead

Although part of the film "Siberian Barber" (18+) is set in Siberia, it was shot in the Nizhny Novgorod region. Oleg Menshikov's character falls in love with American Jane (Julia Ormond), unaware that she came to Russia with a secret mission. After tragic events, he finds himself in exile. The self-propelled sawmill "Siberian Barber" was specially constructed at one of the military factories near Nizhny Novgorod. The final scenes were shot at the Shchelokovsky Farmstead Museum-Reserve, which preserves examples of wooden architecture. These landscapes also appeared in "Cherry Osk" (12+), "Klim Smagin's Life" (0+), and "Children of Arbatskaya" (12+).

      Chkalov Staircase

In Nikolai Rozantsev's film "Not Yet Evening" (12+), Nizhny Novgorod, then Gorky, is depicted as remembered from old films. The main character, Inna (Inna Makarova), has worked at a factory all her life, raised children, but now feels lonely. Her personal story unfolds against the backdrop of the Chkalov Staircase, the Georkievskaya Tower, and the observation platform—about her attempt to start over and find happiness.
