In the national project "New Atomic and Energy Technologies," it is necessary to allocate separate funding for the construction of small modular reactors (SMRs). This proposal was made by the Chairman of the State Council Commission on "Energy" and the Head of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Aysen Nikolaev.

He noted that Russia has already developed or is ready to produce ultra-small capacity stations; however, their funding is not yet provided under the national project. Nikolaev emphasized that such facilities are in demand, especially in remote and energy-deficient territories.

According to him, the greatest need for SMRs exists in the Far East and Arctic regions, where there is a significant deficit of electricity.

The head of Yakutia added that developing the small nuclear reactor segment is important for maintaining and strengthening Russia's technological leadership in energy. Today, the country holds strong positions in medium and large nuclear reactors, but, in his words, it is necessary to move further by developing new directions.

"Implementing several projects in this segment will allow Russia not only to establish itself as one of the leaders in the global energy market but also to improve the reliability of domestic energy supply," Nikolaev explained.

According to Rosstat, over the past ten years, electricity consumption in the Far East has increased by 26%, which is twice the national average. The forecast up to 2030 also shows a leading dynamic: an estimated annual growth of 5%, again more than twice the overall Russian level.

To cover the projected deficit, by 2030, approximately 2.2 gigawatts of thermal power plant capacity and at least 1.7 gigawatts of renewable energy sources need to be integrated into the power systems of the Far Eastern Federal District.
