Culture and Leisure During a long cycling journey across Russia, Spanish traveler Anselmo stopped in the Nizhny Novgorod region. In the village of Vorotynets, he spent a day there, speaking with a correspondent from IA "Vremya N." Anselmo has long dreamed of crossing Russia by bicycle, and this summer he managed to start an extensive journey covering 13,000 kilometers. Preparation took quite some time: the Spaniard carefully studied the route and reviews from other travelers. He is currently heading along the M-7 highway towards Cheboksary and Kazan.
"I really like Russia — it’s beautiful and interesting here. It’s a big challenge because I am traveling alone, but I was prepared — I learned everything I could in advance," shared Anselmo. According to the cyclist, he was pleasantly surprised by the friendly attitude of Russians. Despite not speaking Russian, communication occurs via an online translator on his phone. People readily respond, suggesting places to stay the night, buy groceries, or simply help with directions.
At the same time, Anselmo noted that Russia lacks conditions for safe cycle tourism.
"Your country isn’t very adapted for cycling. There are shoulders on the roads and it’s convenient to ride on them, but there’s no dedicated lane for cyclists. That’s understandable — the country is vast, and such solutions are probably only possible in large cities," the traveler noted. Anselmo’s route may change after he visits Altai. He said he will decide later whether to continue across Russia or cross the border into China and then head to Vladivostok. The final point of his round-the-world trip will be Tokyo, which he will reach by sea, and then he will return home.
Foreign tourists often visit Vorotynets — on their way to Moscow or Kazan. Last year, for example, a Chinese couple came here, traveling on a boat along the Volga and Sura, admiring the scenery and sampling local berries. A group of German bikers also passed through the village — they were especially impressed by smoked fish.
The development of the tourist sector could turn the Vorotynets urban district into an attractive destination for both Russians and foreigners.
