A team of school students from the Nizhny Novgorod region was among the awardees of the All-Russian Children's Environmental Forum 2024 (0+), winning in the "Best Project on Animal Protection" category.
According to the organizers, young environmentalists from Nizhny Novgorod presented an initiative to study and protect rare predatory birds inhabiting the region.
The project was highly praised by experts for its practical significance, originality, potential to involve a broad audience, and its social value. The jury paid special attention to the feasibility of implementation and contribution to improving quality of life.
In 2025, the team continued their work, moving into the practical phase. Professional ornithologists were involved in the project, and the school students, together with teachers, conducted field research in specially protected natural areas, including the Kerzhen River Reserve.
As part of the project, expeditions to protected zones and a themed "Owl Tour" with ornithologist Alexey Levashkin were organized. Participants studied the nests of the bearded vulture and the long-legged owl, recorded the behavior of the tawny owl after its return from Africa, and launched monitoring in the "Svetlye Ozyora" natural complex.
Young ecologists maintained observation diaries, created photo reports and video materials for educational purposes. Additionally, in partnership with the Military Forest Management, work began on developing a plan for installing artificial nesting sites for predatory birds.
The project is currently actively developing. The team is preparing grant applications, seeking new partners, and working on creating an informational platform dedicated to rare species of predatory birds in the Nizhny Novgorod region.
Meanwhile, the organizers are already preparing for the next forum: DEF-2025 will be held in Chelyabinsk on October 14–15.
The forum is organized by the national environmental fund "Kompas" and the government of Chelyabinsk region, with support from the State Duma Committee on Ecology, Rosprirodnadzor, the Ministry of Natural Resources, and the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation.
