Economy From September 1, 2025, the maternity benefit for female students will be increased to 100% of the subsistence minimum in the Nizhny Novgorod region. This is stated in the new law signed by President Vladimir Putin on July 23.
On average across the country, the benefit will amount to approximately 90,202 rubles for a standard maternity leave of 140 days. Previously, this amount was nearly four times less — about 23,000 rubles.
Institutions in Nizhny Novgorod have already commented on the innovation. Nikita Avralеv, acting rector of NGLU named after Dobrolubov, stated that the university is ready to support their female students not only financially but also organizationally.
"Motherhood is an important stage in a woman's life, and at NGLU we strive to provide each student with maximum support, allowing them to combine studies and caring for a child without compromising family well-being and their future career success. In addition to financial support, our university offers other opportunities for pregnant students, such as flexible study schedules, personalized approaches, and other measures aimed at creating comfortable learning conditions and successful exam preparation," Avralеv noted.
Nizhny Novgorod State University named after Lobachevsky clarified that the benefit of 90,202 rubles will be paid to full-time students. However, the law itself does not specify the form of education. Payments are authorized not only for university students but also for college students, students of additional professional education institutions, and scientific organizations.
It is also worth noting that within the framework of the Five-Year Family Plan in the Nizhny Novgorod region, measures to support families with children are in place.
Moreover, Nizhny Novgorod region leads Russia in payments for childbirth.
