Culture and Leisure A wooden mansion from the late 19th - early 20th century in the worker's settlement of Varnavino, Nizhny Novgorod region, has found a new owner and prospects for restoration. The building was acquired by a resident of Moscow originally from Varnavinsky District. This was reported by the ANO "ASIRIS", noting that the property was included in the organization's Catalog of Historic Real Estate.
The house was built as the main estate building for Ivan Gavrilovich Popov, an honorable citizen of the city and a first-guild merchant, who left a significant mark in Varnavin's history as a philanthropist and urban planner. He owned passenger steamship "Dmitry", three income-generating houses, and a men's gymnasium building with brick gates — all located near the purchased mansion.
The building consists of two floors. The ground floor served as a servant’s and utility rooms, while the taller second floor was residential and intended for the owner’s family. Partially preserved are stucco, tiled stoves, verandas with Doric columns, and a wrought-iron fence on a brick foundation.
The building had been in a state of disrepair for a long time, was vacated, and was slated for demolition. However, in 2023, a public commission recognized it as having signs of a cultural heritage site and high urban-value.
The new owner plans to adapt the building for residential use while preserving its historical significance. ANO "ASIRIS" added that the revival of the house became possible largely thanks to the support of local government head Alexander Gennadyevich Frolov.
It was previously reported that a catalog of regional historic real estate had been developed, allowing investors to select properties on the condition of restoration and preservation of their historical appearance. It was also announced that in 2025, 20 historic houses in the Nizhny Novgorod region would be rehabilitated. The NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has a Telegram channel.
