IncidentsResidents of the Nizhny Novgorod region became victims of 76 fraudulent schemes in just one week. According to the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the region, from July 14 to 20, scammers stole over 54 million rubles from people.
Most often, criminals posed as bank employees and "security service" personnel, deceiving 36 people. Another 13 people were defrauded during online shopping, and seven were promised easy earnings.
One of the victims was an elderly resident of Nizhny Novgorod. He received a call from an unknown number, and the caller pretended to be a neighbor. The woman explained that doors in the building would soon be replaced, and a new intercom system operating with a code would be installed. To connect the man to the "new system," she asked him to dictate the code from an SMS message. The pensioner trusted her and named the digits. A few days later, a new wave of calls began—this time from "officials" from Roskomnadzor and Rosfinmonitoring. They informed him that he had fallen victim to scammers and that his money was now in danger. To protect his savings, the pensioner was advised to transfer them to a special secure account. He followed all instructions and lost 14,265,000 rubles.
Another resident of Nizhny Novgorod communicated for two months via instant messaging with a person claiming to be an employee of a brokerage firm. The person assured him that they would help him earn money through investments. The man took out a loan of 300,000 rubles and added his savings. He transferred all the money to the accounts specified by the "broker." After that, the interlocutor disappeared. The total loss was over 700,000 rubles.
A resident of the Autozavodsky district posted an advertisement online selling custom cakes. She was contacted by a man who wanted to place an order and suggested paying through a "safe transaction." He sent a link, in which the girl entered her bank card details. As a result, instead of a payment, 27,500 rubles were withdrawn from her account.
Earlier, residents of Nizhny Novgorod were reminded of the rules of financial literacy.
