Early in the morning on July 22, a fire broke out in one of the dormitory buildings at Nizhny Novgorod State University named after N.I. Lobachevsky, leading to the evacuation of hundreds of residents. This was reported by the Nizhny Novgorod Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations.
Upon arrival of the first fire and rescue units at the scene, located on Gagarin Avenue, dense smoke was observed in the building's basement premises.
41 emergency personnel and 11 pieces of equipment were dispatched to combat the fire. Thanks to the prompt actions of the emergency services, no casualties or injuries occurred — a total of 339 people were evacuated.
Experts established that the incident was caused by a short circuit in one of the household refrigerators located in the basement.
An investigation is currently underway, and measures will be implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Earlier, it was reported that two residents of Nizhny Novgorod were injured during a fire on the Volga River bank.
