In the second quarter of 2025, 2,326 individuals and sole entrepreneurs in the Nizhny Novgorod Region were declared bankrupt. This information is provided by the Federal Bankruptcy Registry.

Compared to the same period in 2024, when 1,680 people became bankrupt, the increase was 38%.

Since the beginning of the year, there have been 4,377 insolvency cases in the region: 2,051 in the first quarter and 2,326 in the second. In comparison, during the same periods last year, there were 1,754 and 1,680 cases respectively.

Additionally, in 2025, the region received 47 notices of initiation of bankruptcy proceedings concerning legal entities and peasant farms.

As a result of 2024, 7,642 people in the Nizhny Novgorod Region received the status of bankrupt, which is a 26% increase over 2023 figures.

Overall in Russia, 138,847 individuals and sole entrepreneurs were declared bankrupt in the second quarter — an increase of 36.5% compared to the previous year. In 97.3% of cases, citizens independently initiated the process.

A notable increase has been observed in the number of approved debt restructuring plans: in the second quarter, there were 675, which is 2.2 times more than the same period last year. This indicates a development of the bankruptcy institute as a tool for financial recovery rather than only liquidation. The Supreme Court continues to shape practices that facilitate the approval of plans even when creditors do not agree.

At the same time, as noted by the Federal Registry, there has been a significant decline in the number of corporate bankruptcies. The number of open bankruptcy cases decreased by 30.4% compared to the same period in 2024 — down to 1,580 cases. This is the lowest figure since 2011, when such data first began to be published. For the first half of the year, the decline was 26.5%, highlighting a steady trend towards reducing liquidation procedures.

Simultaneously, the number of bankruptcy applications from creditors and tax authorities is decreasing. The share of the Federal Tax Service in the total number of applicants dropped from 27% to 15%, while applications from creditors fell by nearly a third. Meanwhile, the proportion of debtors initiating bankruptcy procedures increased significantly—from 7% to 17%, possibly indicating greater financial awareness and readiness of businesses to address problems independently.

It was previously reported that a court recognized Nizhny Novgorod State Duma deputy Dmitry Kolyvanov as bankrupt.
