VTB has assessed the competition between banks and marketplaces.

      Despite the rapid growth of the client base of ecosystem banks, they will not be able to compete with traditional banks in profitability. This opinion was expressed by VTB First Deputy Chairman Dmitry Pyanov in an interview with Kommersant.

      According to Pyanov, the number of active clients of large marketplaces such as Ozon and Wildberries reaches about 90 million people, comparable to Sberbank's client base. However, only a portion of marketplace clients are simultaneously clients of their banks.

      "But then the question arises, what kind of asset is this, and can Ozon Bank earn on these retail clients in the same way as a traditional bank," Pyanov ponders.

      The main problem of ecosystem banks lies in the quality of their client base. They lack salary clients, and the income per client is significantly lower than in traditional banks. Additionally, they do not have a corporate segment, which ensures low capital utilization; their maximum is working with their own sellers.

      VTB already notices that clients are transferring funds from accounts in VTB to accounts in Ozon Bank or Wildberries Bank. However, this is essentially just a transfer for purchases and does not pose a threat to the main salary bank.

      "In the medium term, any first-category ecosystem bank will be comparable to Sberbank only in the number of active clients, but not in income or liabilities per client," forecasts a top manager of VTB.
