Doctors saved the eyesight of a 91-year-old woman from Nizhny Novgorod with cataracts and glaucoma.
September 4, 2026 18:45 Society In the Nizhny Novgorod Geriatric Center, a 91-year-old patient with cataracts and glaucoma was helped to preserve her vision. The operation was performed in the ophthalmology department of the City Clinical Hospital No. 3 of Nizhny Novgorod - Nizhny Novgorod Geriatric Center. Thanks to the combined intervention, the doctors were able to solve two problems at once: restore visual acuity and normalize intraocular pressure. After the operation, the woman no longer needed to constantly use hypotensive drops, and the risk of further development of glaucoma decreased. The operation was performed by ophthalmologist and top-category ophthalmic surgeon Irina Volkova. The surgical intervention was carried out under local anesthesia and intravenous sedation and took about 30-40 minutes.
"Many of our patients are afraid to see an ophthalmologist, thinking that at their age, surgery is already impossible or dangerous. This is a deep misconception. Age itself is not a contraindication for such surgeries. What matters is not the number of years lived, but the overall health condition," the doctor said.
The patient herself noticed a significant improvement the very next day after the operation. According to her, the fog in front of her eyes disappeared, and colors became brighter and clearer.
"Before the operation, I could hardly see my grandchildren's faces, I couldn't read. I was afraid that at my age it was already too late to change anything. But Irina Evgenyevna supported me and convinced me," the woman shared.
Let us remind you that modern treatment methods allow even very elderly patients to maintain independence and their usual quality of life. Such work aligns with the goals of the national project "Sustained and Active Life," implemented in the country by the order of the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin. It was previously reported that Nizhny Novgorod doctors removed a tumor from a patient's ovary measuring about 20 centimeters without a cavity operation.
