The red Gorbatskaya breed of cows will be revived in the Nizhny Novgorod region.

      On September 4, 2026, at 09:31, Society In the Nizhny Novgorod region, plans are underway to revive the red Gorbatov breed of cows. This was reported by the deputy governor of the region, Yegor Polyakov, on his MAX channel. The prospects for the preservation and restoration of the breed were discussed at a working meeting with the participation of specialists from the regional Ministry of Agriculture, federal scientists, and representatives of the agricultural holding "Russian Field." The red Gorbatov is an indigenous Nizhny Novgorod breed, well adapted to the local climate. It is characterized by resistance to diseases and produces milk with a high fat and protein content. Currently, such cows have survived in the region only in one farm - JSC "Gorbatovskoye." There are 83 animals there, including calves. The restoration of the breed is already underway in stages. Specialists have selected samples for genetic expertise, conducted molecular genetic studies, and have begun developing a breeding plan. The next step will be submitting documents to the Ministry of Agriculture of Russia. The agricultural holding "Russian Field" intends to obtain for JSC "Gorbatovskoye" the status of a gene pool farm for the red Gorbatov breed. If approved, this will not only officially secure the status but also receive financial support. Earlier, we reported that work continues in the Nizhny Novgorod region to return the European bison. In early August, at a working meeting of the committee on ecology and natural resources of the regional Duma, three possible sites for the future habitat of the animals were named.
