Russians have sharply increased the volume of money transfers abroad.

      Since the beginning of 2026, clients of Russian banks have become more active in transferring money abroad. For example, retail clients of VTB made more than 18 million cross-border transfers—4.5 times more than in the same period last year, and their total volume doubled to 233 billion rubles. This was reported by Georgy Gorshkov, Deputy President-Chairman of the Management Board of VTB, at the WEF 2026. Similar dynamics are noted by other market participants.

      Russians can now make transfers to more than 150 countries worldwide—using card numbers, phone numbers, account numbers, as well as cash withdrawals. The top five countries for transfer volumes, besides China, include Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Belarus. In terms of the number of transactions, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, China, Vietnam, and Kyrgyzstan lead. The main purposes of international transactions are purchasing goods and services, paying for foreign services, sending money to relatives and friends, and topping up accounts for travel. The average transfer amount is 13,000 rubles.

      China has been the undisputed leader in transfer volumes for the second consecutive year: its share exceeds 56% of all cross-border operations of VTB and Post Bank clients. The structure of transfers to China is highly differentiated: 96% of the volume is accounted for by transfers using account numbers in yuan, while the most common type of transaction (87%) remains transfers using phone numbers. "We are seeing a steady increase in demand for transfers to China from private clients. The development of payment infrastructure with the PRC is one of our priorities. We are constantly expanding the available methods of transfers: from classic transfers using account numbers to payments via QR codes, which are becoming increasingly popular among Russian tourists," noted Georgy Gorshkov.
