The festival "Shalyapin. Geniuses of the Place" will take place in September in the "Protected Quarters."

      On August 29, 2026, at 12:37, the poster for the musical and educational festival "Shalyapin. Geniuses of the Place" (6+) will take place on September 5 and 6 in the quarter of the Church of the Three Saints. This was announced by the ANO "ASIRIS." This year, the event is dedicated to the friendship and creative union of Fyodor Shalyapin and Maxim Gorky, whose biographies are closely linked to Nizhny Novgorod and the Three Saints quarter. The main theme will be their joint contribution to the creation of the People's House, which is now known as the Nizhny Novgorod Theater of Opera and Ballet named after A.S. Pushkin. The decision to build the "building of enlightenment, labor, and rest" was made on November 5, 1897, at a meeting of the Society for the Promotion of Primary Education in Nizhny Novgorod Province with the active support of Gorky. Shalyapin gave several charity concerts for the benefit of the construction starting in 1901. On September 5, 1903, it was his performance that opened the People's House to the public. As noted by the General Director of ANO "ASIRIS," Ekaterina Kryunas, the festival preserves the living continuity of traditions: music, stories, and the famous bass that sounded here over a hundred years ago once again fill the historical locations and courtyards of the quarter. She also emphasized that this year the festival actively supports the Nizhny Novgorod Theater of Opera and Ballet—the direct successor of the People's House founded by Gorky and Shalyapin. The theater soloists Sergey Telenkov and Mikhail Naumov will perform Russian romances and songs from Shalyapin's repertoire accompanied by acoustic guitars on September 5 at 18:00 at Slavyanskaya, 4. On September 6 at 12:00 and 16:00, there will be a city promenade "Shalyapin and Gorky: Points of Attraction." Participants will be guided from the Three Saints quarter to the Nizhny Novgorod Theater of Opera and Ballet—the former People's House. At 20:00 at Slavyanskaya, 4, a performance "Windows into the Life of an Artist" will be shown. The production is based on Shalyapin's memoirs and his correspondence with Gorky. The artists will address the audience from the windows of the estate using the genuine words of the singer and his contemporaries. The visual design will be created by artist Katya Gushchina.
