Digital ruble in Russia: what will change for citizens and businesses after its implementation
On August 20, 2026, at 15:55, Economy The Central Bank of Russia announced that systemically important banks are ready to implement the digital ruble starting September 1, 2026. This type of currency will become the third form of national currency in the country, alongside cash and non-cash. What is the digital ruble, how to use it, and what benefits will it bring?
What is the digital ruble?
The digital ruble is a new form of cashless payment that will be stored in a special registry resembling blockchain, explained Dmitry Machikhin, the founder of the "BIT Okay" service, in a comment for 360.ru. Blockchain is a technology where data is distributed across multiple independent computers, making the system transparent and protected from counterfeiting.
Unlike cryptocurrencies, the digital ruble is issued by the state, specifically the Central Bank of Russia. It will have its abbreviation - CVCB (Central Bank Digital Currency) in Russian or CBDC (Central Bank Digital Currency) in English.
In Russia, there are cash and non-cash forms of the ruble, and the digital ruble will become the third form. It will be stored on the Central Bank's platform and have a unique code. The digital ruble will be available to everyone, but initially, it can only be used by clients of banks that first implement the functionality. Essentially, it is just another form of cashless ruble, clarified the expert.
How will the digital ruble work?
For citizens, the digital ruble will be available through special digital wallets that can be opened in banks. However, the first users will be clients of those banks that implement this function first. The digital ruble will not differ from other cashless rubles, except for the method of storage and use.
Advantages of the digital ruble
The digital ruble can simplify the process of paying for goods and services both within the country and beyond its borders. However, this will require the conclusion of appropriate agreements between the Central Bank and other countries.
One of the main advantages of the digital ruble is the possibility of automating control over the financing of state projects. This will help prevent the outflow of funds to "shadow" banks and increase the transparency of budget expenditures.
How to open a digital wallet?
Starting September 2026, a digital wallet can be opened in banks such as VTB, Sberbank, Gazprombank, Alfa-Bank, T-Bank, PSB, Rosselkhozbank, Sovcombank, Moscow Credit Bank, UniCredit Bank, Raiffeisenbank, and "Dom.RF". From September 2027, other banks with a universal license will join the system.
Mobile applications of these banks will feature functionality for independently opening a digital wallet. There may be provisions for converting non-cash rubles into digital ones. However, there are currently no precise instructions for this process.
Restrictions and features
The digital ruble cannot be withdrawn at ATMs. To do this, it must first be converted into a non-cash form, and then cash can be withdrawn. There will also be a limit on wallet replenishments - 300,000 rubles per month.
It is important to note that the Central Bank will not pay interest on the balance of digital rubles. This may reduce the attractiveness of this form of currency for citizens.
Benefits for the economy
As economist and director of the Institute of New Society Vasily Koltashov explained, the introduction of the digital ruble could bring several benefits to the economy. Firstly, it will reduce transaction fees and tariffs for businesses. Secondly, it will simplify the administration of budget payments and increase the transparency of government expenditures. Thirdly, it will contribute to a gradual abandonment of cash, which could make the financial system more modern and efficient. The NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has channels on Telegram and MAX.
