Treasure as a journey into the past

      The new exhibition "Family Values" is presented at the Rukavishnikov Estate Museum. It is not just an exhibition of precious artifacts discovered in an old house, but also a journey into the past, telling the story of Nizhny Novgorod residents who left a bright mark in history. Life is the best writer. In our time, it seems that all historical discoveries and ancient treasures have long been uncovered in the past. Adventure novels have been written, and detectives can no longer surprise us. And here, as if in response to all clichés and stereotypes, life presents surprises. Last year, a real treasure was discovered in Nizhny Novgorod, under the parquet floor. Its discovery was aided by the major renovation of the house of merchant Filiter Kuznetsov, located on Malaya Pokrovskaya Street, which had long needed reconstruction. Since 1918, after expropriation, various departmental institutions were located there, and today it houses the medical unit of the FSB. This event can be compared to the treasure found in the house of the Kamensky merchants, which, by the way, is located not far from the Rukavishnikov estate. This happened more than 50 years ago: in a cache behind a false wall, items were discovered that were more interesting to visitors than to historians. The current find contains documents, which means topics for scientific study. Initially, the workers clearing the construction debris did not even pay attention to a small box found by the fireplace. It once held ladies' trifles (either soap or perfume), but then the true value of the find became clear. Historians got involved in the investigation, and that is when the treasure began its journey to true revival. For researchers, the treasure is not only the items and jewelry themselves (25 gold pieces with precious stones), but even the newspaper in which the salt shakers were wrapped, indicating the date: July 1917. And, most importantly, it is the restoration of the memory of the merchant family Kuznetsov, whose life could become the plot for a major work about Nizhny Novgorod's history and personalities. Names and times. According to available information, unfortunately, there are no descendants of the Kuznetsov merchants left in Nizhny Novgorod. Filiter Pavlovich passed away in 1925. However, the son of the owners of the found treasures, Andrey Filiterovich, worked for many years in Gorky as a teacher and engineer. Most likely, he was unaware of the treasure, especially since, according to experts, such "caches" were made urgently in case of arrest and home searches. Konstantin, one of the three Kuznetsov brothers, refused a trading career and went to France in the early 20th century to become an artist. By the way, his personal exhibition took place at the art museum three years ago. Today, several works donated by the Kuznetsov Foundation to the Nizhny Novgorod Art Museum are displayed at the exhibition. But that's not all! The publishing house "Quartz" released a book "Kuznetsovs. The Saga of the Millionaires of Zhelnino," and the occasion for its appearance was this treasure. The GTRK "Nizhny Novgorod" television company created an educational film "The Secret of Merchant Kuznetsov's Treasure" specifically for the opening, with a reconstruction of events and a detailed story about the family that rose from serfs in the village of Zhelnino to one of the most respected and wealthy families in Nizhny Novgorod. After all, the true treasure is the people of Nizhny Novgorod!
