416 cases of HIV have been detected in the Nizhny Novgorod region since the beginning of the year.
August 17, 2026 17:22 Society Since the beginning of 2026, 416 cases of HIV infection have been registered in the Nizhny Novgorod region. This was reported by the editor-in-chief of the medical publication "Statsionar-Press," Alexey Nikонов, citing data from the regional center for the fight against AIDS and infectious diseases. Over seven months, more than 797 thousand residents of the region were tested for HIV. The youngest patient with HIV is 21 years old, and the oldest is 50 years old. The infection was most often detected in working men, with the average age of those infected being 42 years. The main route of transmission of the infection remains sexual: it accounts for 81.3% of cases. At the same time, the share of homosexual* contacts increased from 2.4% to 2.9% over the year. The AIDS center also reported that over the year, the HIV incidence rate in the region decreased from 14.8 to 11.4 per 100,000 population. They linked this trend to the introduction of new prevention formats, regular lectures for students, conscripts, and future parents, as well as the expansion of HIV testing in medical organizations. It should be noted that in 2025, 939 new cases of HIV infection were identified in the region—28% less than the previous year when 1,323 cases were registered. *The LGBT movement is recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation.
