      The "Protected Quarters" of the ANO "ASIRIS" in collaboration with the Nizhny Novgorod Diocese's Nizhny Novgorod Deanery invite residents and guests of the city to celebrate the Apple Spas, which will take place in the quarter of the Church of the Three Saints on August 19. Guests can immerse themselves in the traditions of one of the most beloved folk holidays at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries: the blessing of apples in the Secret Garden, literary readings, and discussions about the profound meaning of the Transfiguration. In pre-revolutionary Nizhny, the Apple Spas was a special day when families would go to church with baskets of the first apples and then hold festive gatherings. The "Protected Quarters" will recreate this warm atmosphere in the historical interiors of the house at Korolenko St., 18, and in the Secret Garden—among wooden houses that have preserved the spirit of the old city. "The Apple Spas is the popular name for the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, associated with the ancient tradition of bringing the first fruits of the harvest to the temple. In Russia, where grapes were a rarity, they were replaced with apples—hence the name 'Apple Spas.' We will discuss what lies behind this familiar name: why apples, why in mid-August, and what deep meaning is hidden in the rite of blessing the first fruits," said the event host, candidate of theology, head of the local history literature sector at the Nizhny Novgorod State Regional Scientific Library, Alexey Diakonov. "For us, it is important not just to talk about traditions but to give people the opportunity to feel part of a living history, to temporarily become those very Nizhny Novgorod residents for whom the Apple Spas was not just a calendar date but a true experience of the change of seasons. Everyone can bring their apples for blessing, immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the old house, and hear how Russian classics described the transition from summer to autumn," noted the project leader of the "Protected Quarters" ANO "ASIRIS," Nina Ershova.

      — 17:00–17:45 — "Apple Spas and the Folk Calendar: A Meeting of Two Traditions." Meeting with candidate of theology Alexey Diakonov in the parlor of the Avdotya Skvortsova house (Korolenko St., 18, 2nd floor). Limited seating (45 people).
