Two training and educational dormitories have been opened in Nizhny Novgorod.
Two educational training dormitories for students have opened at the Social Services House for Children and Young Adults "Nadezhda" in Nizhny Novgorod. One of them is specially equipped for the comfortable living of individuals with limited mobility. The second is a pre-training dormitory where students begin to acquire independent living skills before transitioning to the main educational dormitory. The arrangement of new spaces became possible thanks to the implementation of a unified model of assistance to children in the region. About 8 million rubles were allocated from the regional budget for this project. The opening of the dormitories was attended by the Minister of Social Development and Family Policy of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, Igor Sedykh, and the director of the NGO "Resource Center 'Children in the Family'" Svetlana Meller. "Currently, 176 individuals with developmental disabilities aged 4 to 35 live in the 'Nadezhda' House, more than half of whom are young adults with mental disabilities. Previously, most graduates saw only one path after leaving—into a psychiatric boarding school. The creation of educational training dormitories opens up the possibility of supported living and independent life for them," explained Igor Sedykh. Support for young people with disabilities is one of the areas of work within the national project "Family." Educational training dormitories allow young adults with mental disabilities to acquire independence skills in conditions as close to home as possible, with the support of mentors. Here, they learn to cook, use household appliances, and plan their activities. Mentors explain to the students how to shop, navigate the city, use public transport, and manage their personal budgets. The first experience of employment is also crucial. This gradually leads to the socialization and integration of the residents of the Social Services House into society. The Ministry of Social Development and Family Policy of the Nizhny Novgorod Region reported that a three-tiered system is in place to prepare students with mental disabilities for transitioning to supported living. In the first stage, they attend classes on social and domestic adaptation in groups. The second stage involves moving to the pre-training dormitory "Student House," which accommodates 28 places. Here, students begin to organize their daily lives independently and make decisions in everyday situations. The third stage is the educational training dormitory, where young adults learn to live autonomously. The first such training space for eight places was opened in 2024. This year, six students from the institution are completing the educational program and will move to a supported living apartment. For individuals with limited mobility, a two-tiered preparation is provided. After completing the social and domestic adaptation course, young adults will immediately move to the educational training dormitory. "The first students have already moved into the new educational training dormitory for individuals with limited mobility—six girls who have lived in the boarding system since childhood. They already have a clear schedule, have started cooking independently, and plan to completely stop visiting the cafeteria in the near future," noted Svetlana Meller. The next stage in the development of the "Nadezhda" House will be the expansion of its infrastructure. By the end of the year, the institution plans to open a department for students with palliative status, a day care center for children with disabilities, and to equip a supported living apartment for six places outside the boarding school territory. Nearly 11.8 million rubles will be allocated from the regional budget for the creation of these three new structural units as part of the unified model of assistance to children. It is worth noting that the national project "Family" includes activities aimed at the comprehensive development of families: expanding support measures, creating conditions for active longevity of the older generation, and ensuring quality and accessible medical care. National projects are being implemented in the country at the direction of the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin.
*The category "young adults" in palliative care was introduced to designate individuals with severe incurable diseases from childhood who have reached the age of 18.
