      On August 12, 2026, at 07:00, Society The number of high-accident spots on the roads of the Nizhny Novgorod region decreased by 91% in the first half of 2026 - from 89 to 8. This was reported by the regional Ministry of Transport.

      As noted by the agency, each section of accident concentration is analyzed, after which specialists develop and implement a set of measures to improve road safety.

      According to the regional traffic police, in the first half of 2026, the number of accidents in the region decreased by 7.4% compared to the same period last year. The number of fatalities in accidents decreased by 24.8%.

      The number of accidents related to crossing into oncoming traffic also decreased by 60.4%: from 396 to 157.

      As an example, the regional Ministry of Transport cited two intersections in Nizhny Novgorod where accidents were previously frequently registered: the streets of Gaidar and Patriots, as well as the streets of Ilyinskaya and the duplicate of Krasnoselskaya. After the traffic lights were reconfigured, no accidents were registered at these intersections in the first half of 2026.

      For eight accident-prone road sections, additional measures have already been developed, which are planned to be implemented by the end of 2026. These include the installation of photo-video recording complexes and LED road signs, modernization of traffic lights with changes to their operating phases, as well as changes to speed limits.

      "Measures to eliminate and reduce the number of accidents have already been developed for eight accident-prone road sections this year, and we plan to implement them by the end of the year," said Leonid Samukhin, Minister of Transport and Highways of the Nizhny Novgorod region.

      At the same time, in 2026, the approach to accounting for the number of vehicles in the region changed. According to the traffic police statistics as of January 1, 2026, there are 1,268,986 vehicles registered in the Nizhny Novgorod region - 430,000 fewer than in 2025. Meanwhile, the total number of vehicles in Russia is increasing.

      As noted by the regional Ministry of Transport, the change in the statistical number of vehicles may affect the results of independent ratings that consider the ratio of the number of accidents to the number of vehicles.
