Nizhny Novgorod residents were told which medicinal plants can be found in the region.

      August 9, 2026 11:26 Society The Nizhny Novgorod region is home to many medicinal plants. Olga Biryukova, a lecturer at the Department of Botany and Zoology of N.N. Lobachevsky NNGU and head of the herbarium of the Botanical Garden, told the publication "Living in Nizhny" about the most common species. According to the specialist, one can find St. John's wort, lingonberry, bitter wormwood, and common oregano in the region. Some of the medicinal plants growing in the Nizhny Novgorod region are included in the State Pharmacopoeia of the Russian Federation, while others are used only in traditional medicine. At the same time, some plants with medicinal properties are also poisonous. In particular, these include lily of the valley and Lobelia's hellebore. Biryukova warned Nizhny Novgorod residents that it is not allowed to collect such plants on their own.
