According to Chernikova, in 2025, it is planned to enroll 29,992 children in the first grade. This is 2,200 fewer than in the previous school year, when 32,182 children were admitted to schools in the region. The decrease is about 6%. As the deputy minister emphasized, the reduction in the number of first-graders is not related to the migration outflow of the population, but to demographic reasons. "The decrease in the number of first-graders is not a trend and not a consequence of the outflow of people from the Nizhny Novgorod region. It is a natural decline against the backdrop of the overall decrease in the population and the fact that in 2020, during the COVID period, fewer children were born," explained Maria Chernikova. At the same time, the average occupancy of first grades in the cities of the Nizhny Novgorod region remains high - at the level of 28-30 people. Regional authorities are monitoring this situation and are trying to reduce the load by building new schools and renovating existing buildings.
