Head of the Ministry of Science Anisimov: the system for selecting applicants may change.

August 8, 2026 08:38 Science The Unified State Exam may undergo significant changes in the future or give way to a new system for assessing applicants. This was reported by the Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, Viktor Anisimov, during a press conference dedicated to the results of the 2026 admissions campaign. According to him, the unified exam has played an important role in Russian education, but over time a new approach to student selection may be required.

"Most likely, the Unified State Exam has already fulfilled its global mission. Changes in this area are brewing, but what exactly will come after it is still unknown," noted the head of the agency.

The question of the effectiveness of the Unified State Exam has been a subject of public discussions for many years. Some believe that high results can be achieved through preparation with tutors, while others point to the shortcomings of the system itself. At the same time, the exam results remain the main tool that allows graduates from different regions to compete for places in the country's leading universities. The rector of NGLU N. A. Dobrolyubov, Nikita Avralev, pointed out that the perception of the Unified State Exam as exclusively a testing process does not correspond to reality. As an example, he cited the foreign language exam, which includes an oral component and requires students not only to know the material but also to apply their skills.

Moreover, according to the rector, the tasks include topics related to Russian history, including key events of the past. He noted that the exam assesses not only the volume of knowledge but also qualities such as attentiveness, the ability to work with information, accuracy, and the ability to formulate answers clearly. In conclusion, the head of the regional Ministry of Science, Viktor Anisimov, stated that the Unified State Exam has proven to be an effective tool for improving the quality of graduates' preparation and has fulfilled the tasks set before it. However, the further development of the university admission system remains an open question. It was previously reported that nearly 10,000 people have already been admitted to Nizhny Novgorod universities. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has channels on Telegram and MAX.
