Golden river - embroidered shores

      At the Nizhny Novgorod Art Museum, the exhibition "Gold of the North" features the best examples of gold embroidery collected from several museums in Russia. Peasants and nobles. The exhibition turned out to be multifaceted, like a bright kaleidoscope, showcasing to visitors all the diversity and beauty of costumes adorned with gold embroidery. Whether it was young women ready for marriage or married peasant women, members of the upper class or tsars – all wore clothing decorated with embroidery. This is a symbol of connection to traditions, like ancient roots, a fine thread stretched to the Motherland. Beautiful exhibits of a disappearing craft have been preserved in the museum of the small town of Kargopol (Arkhangelsk region), where only a few gold embroiderers remain. As part of the tour, which occurs not only in theaters but also at exhibitions, folk costumes and headwear from Kargopol and the Vologda province from the second half of the 19th century were brought to Nizhny Novgorod, as well as ceremonial garments of the nobility and members of the royal family from the Gatchina museum-reserve "Tsarskoye Selo." Nizhny Novgorod region can still be proud of masters of traditional embroidery, most common in past centuries in Gorodets, Lyskov and Arzamas districts. A women's costume (a sarafan with a dushegreya) from the village of Bezvodnoye is presented at the stand (from the reserves of the Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museum). However, upon closer inspection, it differs in patterns and the purple color of the base from northern samples. The exhibition is built with huge, essentially theatrical, decorations with sacred meaning (concept author – artist Yuri Suchkov). Mannequins are arranged one behind the other, as if models were parading down a runway. By the differences in shawls, sashes, bindings, and kokoshniks, one could previously understand who was before you: a maiden, a married woman who has not given birth, or a mother of a family. However, in the museum's assembly hall, visitors are awaited by the main shock – immersion in an illusory world. Light reflections are everywhere, sounds and splashes of water can be heard. On stage, as if on the shore, stands the archetype of a simple woman, who sees off the rich boats sailing down the river of time. A parade of historical fashion. An interesting fact: Tsar Nicholas I officially regulated uniforms embroidered with gold, according to rank, and the dresses of courtiers by the color of the fabric, with gold or silver thread trim. At the exhibition, they became a reflection of the morals of the era. During the reign of Alexander III, it became fashionable to turn to Russian culture, and themed balls were held. Thus, the costume of the falconer from the time of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, tailored for Nicholas II, with a double-headed eagle on the chest, turned out to have a secret. As the organizers told, items from it were worn in different years: the frock coat while he was the tsarevich, and the boots were tailored for the emperor, for the famous masquerade at the Winter Palace, which was dedicated to the 290th anniversary of the Romanov House. It is hard to look without emotions at the embroidered dresses that belonged to Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna and Alexandra Feodorovna. The train, almost four meters long, was part of the dowry of the last empress. The magnificent outfits were created by the artisans of the St. Petersburg workshop of Olga Bulbenkova, a native of Nizhny Novgorod.
