The arch of the Chkalov Stairs has been damaged again in Nizhny Novgorod. A truck attempted to pass through the tunnel under the historic structure but did not clear the height and got stuck in the archway. The photo was published by the Telegram channel "My Nizhny Novgorod." The impact did not go unnoticed. Plaster fell off the vault, and a noticeable dent appeared on the arch. The truck itself also sustained damage.
This is not the first such incident. Despite the restoration of the Chkalov Stairs for the 800th anniversary of Nizhny Novgorod in the summer of 2021, new damages regularly appear on the site. For instance, in November 2025, a fragment of plaster fell from the Chkalov Stairs onto a passing car. At that time, the press service of the Nizhny Novgorod region government explained that the damages were related not only to seasonal weather conditions but also to regular impacts of the upper parts of truck bodies against the arch vault and the lower part of the facade. This causes the plaster to crack, moisture to enter, and the coating to begin to deteriorate even more. To prevent such incidents, it was planned to install dimensional gates and develop a new traffic organization scheme for this section of the Lower Volga embankment.
Earlier, it was reported that the Ministry of Internal Affairs revealed details of a fatal traffic accident involving a bus in Nizhny Novgorod.
