The design code has been approved for Korolenko Street in Nizhny Novgorod.
On July 15, 2026, at 14:00, the Administration of Nizhny Novgorod approved the architectural and artistic concept for Korolenko Street. The corresponding resolution was published on the city hall's website. The document provides for the implementation of a unified design code for the historic street, which houses 13 cultural heritage sites, including three of federal significance. Among them are "The House where Maxim Gorky lived from 1900 to 1901 and where Nikolai Garin-Mikhaylovsky, Fyodor Shalyapin, Anton Chekhov, and other cultural figures visited" (Korolenko St., 11), "The House where writer Vladimir Korolenko lived from 1888 to 1896" (Korolenko St., 11a), and "The House where Maxim Gorky lived with his grandfather from 1875 to 1876" (Korolenko St., 42).
The street is located within the boundaries of the Three Saints Quarter, which has also had the status of a cultural heritage site since March 2026. The development of the concept is related to the lack of a unified approach to the design of facades and signage. Analysis showed that many structures are outdated, made of low-quality materials, and placed without regard to the historical and architectural features of the buildings. The new document includes only those elements that meet the established requirements. The goal of the design code is to create a cohesive architectural environment, enhance the aesthetic quality of the street, modernize facades considering their historical specificity, and organize the placement of informational structures. The concept defines acceptable locations for signage so that they do not disrupt the external appearance of the buildings.
Restrictions on the color palette and fonts of informational structures are introduced: the design must be uniform within one facade and correspond to its color scheme, and the fonts must be readable and aligned with the architecture of the building. A list of permissible shades is established, as well as colors close to a metallic texture. The use of registered trademarks is allowed. Specific requirements apply to entrance groups and windows. Awnings must be placed strictly above the entrances, made of a single material, and not cover decorative elements of the facade. A unified approach is established for doors within the facade: the same type, color, and degree of glazing. Preference is given to transparent structures with 70-90% glazing. The installation of solid metal doors on facades facing red lines is prohibited, as is changing the position of the door block and the characteristics of glazing. Changing the sizes of window openings and placing advertisements in them is also prohibited. Artistic decoration of shop windows or the installation of tinted double-glazed windows in a unified style is recommended for the ground floors.
Work on the facades of cultural heritage sites must be carried out in accordance with federal legislation. Design assignment, approval from the relevant authority, project documentation, and author's supervision are mandatory. Work is prohibited in the absence of an approved protection subject or actions that could change it or worsen the conditions for its preservation. The placement of engineering equipment on the facades of such buildings is not allowed. During facade repairs, decorative design of construction fences is provided. Options may include a universal "reboot" image and inscriptions about future changes, photorealistic or graphic images of the repaired facade, as well as the design "Capital of Sunsets" with a panorama of the city. It was previously reported that a design code was approved for Semashko Street. It also became known that the Nizhny Novgorod city hall proposed to fence construction sites in the city center with "wood-like" barriers. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has channels on Telegram and MAX.
