Nizhny Novgorod surgeons saved a man with critical tracheal stenosis.

      On July 2, 2026, at 17:19, Society A complex reconstructive surgery—a circular resection of the trachea—was performed at the City Clinical Hospital No. 5 in Nizhny Novgorod. This was reported by a representative of the healthcare sector in the region, Alexey Nikонов. After suffering from severe pancreatitis and artificial lung ventilation, the man developed a complication—scarring stenosis of the trachea. The airway narrowed to critical sizes, and episodes of suffocation began. Previously, patients with such a diagnosis were typically given a lifelong tracheostomy. The man planned to undergo treatment in Moscow; however, during the preparation of documents, his condition deteriorated sharply, making transportation impossible. The intervention allowed to save the 40-year-old patient from a direct threat to life and possible disability. According to doctors, this is only the second such case in the region. As reported by Dmitry Furzikov, head of the thoracic surgery department at GKB No. 5, the doctors acted urgently. First, the surgeons endoscopically expanded the trachea, and the next day performed a complex operation: they removed the narrowed section and restored the integrity of the organ. The patient can now breathe independently and has already been discharged from the hospital.
