Annual inflation slowed to 5.3% in the Nizhny Novgorod region in May.

June 30, 2026 14:39 Economy The annual inflation in the Nizhny Novgorod region decreased to 5.3% in May 2026. The previous month, the figure was higher at 5.39%. As reported by the Volga-Vyatka Main Directorate of the Bank of Russia, a similar level was recorded across Russia as a whole at 5.31%. In the Volga Federal District, inflation on an annual basis slowed down to 5.9%. At the same time, in 13 regions of the district, price growth slowed down, while in the Perm Krai, it slightly accelerated. In May, prices in the region increased by 0.38% compared to April, which is higher than the national average (0.17%). The main contribution came from services, which became more expensive faster than the average in Russia. The Central Bank associates this with tourist demand, including for river cruises and sanatorium vacations. Sanatorium and wellness services increased in price by 18.02% over the year. The cost of travel in economy class also rose due to seasonal tariff indexing: passenger transport services became more expensive by 4.46% on an annual basis. In May, food prices noticeably decreased. The strongest decline was in egg prices against the backdrop of increased production in the warm season, although they are still 8.18% more expensive compared to last year. Vegetables and fruits also became cheaper, especially cucumbers and tomatoes: over the year, vegetables decreased in price by 17.73%, fruits by 3.48%. Imported fruits became cheaper thanks to the strengthening of the ruble. The decline in dairy product prices continued against the backdrop of increased raw milk production. Over the year, butter became cheaper by 13.82%, milk by 2.14%, cottage cheese by 1.25%, and cheeses by 1.07%. Non-food goods in May, in general, became more expensive. The most noticeable increase was in medical goods—against the backdrop of rising costs for producers and retailers. On an annual basis, they became more expensive by 7.42%. Building materials also increased in price (+0.69% over the year). At the same time, some appliances became cheaper: refrigerators and televisions decreased in price by 5.64% and 7.47%, respectively, due to the strengthening of the ruble. Computers changed little in price over the year (+0.16%). The Bank of Russia notes that it aims to return inflation to the target level of 4% and stabilize prices through the key interest rate, which should support purchasing power and potentially lower credit rates in the future. It is worth noting that on June 19, the Bank of Russia reduced the key rate by 0.25 percentage points to 14.25% per annum. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has channels on Telegram and MAX.
