Two residents of Nizhny Novgorod lost money after deciding to help a "friend."

      Two local residents filed reports with police departments No. 6 and No. 7 of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in Nizhny Novgorod. Both victims reported similar circumstances of the crime: they received messages in a messenger from a mutual acquaintance asking to urgently lend 9,500 rubles. Believing in the authenticity of the request, the women transferred the money to the details provided in the correspondence. However, it turned out that their acquaintance's account had been hacked, and the messages were sent by fraudsters. Criminal cases have been initiated under Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (fraud). The search for the criminals is underway.

      The police of Nizhny Novgorod remind citizens of basic safety rules to avoid becoming victims of such fraud:

      If an acquaintance asks for money in a messenger, be sure to call them back on a regular mobile phone. A one-minute conversation is enough to understand that the account has been hacked.

      Enable two-factor authentication (cloud password) in the settings of your messengers. This will prevent fraudsters from accessing your profile, even if they intercept the code from an SMS.

      When attempting to transfer money using a card number or phone number, always pay attention to the name and patronymic of the recipient. If the details do not match your acquaintance's name, it is 100% fraud.

      If you do encounter a crime, immediately contact the police at the numbers 02, 112, or 102 (from a mobile phone).
