Unmanned trams will be launched in Nizhny Novgorod as part of an experiment.
June 25, 2026 16:03 Society The Ministry of Transport of Russia has proposed to extend the experimental legal regime for testing unmanned trams to the Nizhny Novgorod and Sverdlovsk regions. A draft government resolution has been published for independent anti-corruption expertise. Since July 2024, such a regime has been in effect in Moscow and St. Petersburg. The experiment involves the use of highly automated rail vehicles of two types. In the first case, a test driver must be present in the cabin to monitor the system's operation. In the second option, the tram can be operated without a person in the cabin. The explanatory note states that the initiative was prepared following requests from regional leaders. The governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region sent a corresponding letter to the Ministry of Transport on November 5, 2025, and a similar request from the governor of the Sverdlovsk region was received on April 24, 2026. Additionally, the project proposes to establish planned performance and effectiveness indicators for each participant in the experiment. It was previously reported that a new unmanned delivery route will be tested in Nizhny Novgorod. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has channels on Telegram and MAX.
