Forest, night, dementia: volunteers spoke about the search for an elderly woman from Nizhny Novgorod.

      Volunteers found an elderly woman with dementia who had gone into the forest alone in the Sokolsky district. Details were shared on social media by representatives of the Search and Rescue Center "Lynx." A report of her disappearance was received on Sunday evening. Relatives reported that their grandmother had gone into the forest, taking her mobile phone with her. The communication line operator and an information officer immediately got to work. The first tried to maintain contact with the missing woman, while the second clarified the circumstances with her relatives.

      From the first conversations, it became clear that the search would not be easy: the woman suffers from dementia. In phone conversations, she mentioned that she was picking berries and saw haystacks in front of her, although there were neither berries nor hay in that area at the moment. Volunteers had to sift through real landmarks from the distorted perception of the elderly woman.

      Five crews from the squad were working on-site. Open areas were additionally surveyed using a drone equipped with a thermal imaging camera. However, no traces were found along the presumed route mentioned by the woman.

      By four in the morning, considering the overall fatigue and the need to return to work, the crews halted the search. They were unable to contact the elderly woman at that moment—she was not answering calls. On the way home, the volunteers listened to recordings of the conversations, analyzing possible leads.

      The last attempt to reach her was successful: the woman answered and was able to describe a route familiar to the searchers from previous outings. The crews turned around and returned to the search area.

      The elderly woman refused to stay in one place and decided to go on her own, which increased the risk of losing sight of her again. Nevertheless, the volunteers managed to not miss her on the road. The woman was cold, wet, and heavily bitten by insects. Soon she was handed over to her relatives.

      And then—a happy reunion with her family, tears, and hugs. The grandmother was found thanks in part to the active and correct actions of her family members. Take care of your loved ones! Always be nearby and call for help in time! — urged the volunteers.
