A biologist from Nizhny Novgorod explained how to behave when encountering a viper in the forest.

      June 21, 2026 15:42 Society Associate Professor of the Department of Botany and Zoology at the Lobachevsky Nizhny Novgorod State University Institute of Biology and Biomedicine Andrey Lebedinsky gave advice on how to reduce the risk of a viper bite and how to behave correctly when encountering the only venomous snake in the Nizhny Novgorod region. This was reported by RIA Novosti. According to the expert, the viper is not an aggressive snake and only attacks when threatened, when it cannot escape. If possible, it prefers to crawl away, and when in danger, it coils up and makes false strikes. He added that it is advisable to avoid places where these snakes have been seen before. The biologist emphasized that vipers do not like open spaces and are more often found in the forest. It is there that precautions should be taken, as one might accidentally step on a snake. For protection, the expert recommends wearing rubber boots in the forest, as the viper cannot bite through them. Caution should also be exercised when picking mushrooms and berries: reaching under bushes can bring one close to the snake's head, and this gesture may be perceived as a threat. Furthermore, the specialist urged not to show aggression towards reptiles. If a viper has crawled onto a garden plot or into a yard, one should not attempt to catch or kill it. The species is listed in the Red Book of the Nizhny Novgorod region and is rare. In cases of encounter, the scientist advises creating a factor of concern for the snake—by tapping nearby with a long stick or branch or gently prodding it and carrying it outside the house or yard.
