Copper icons were stolen from the sketes of Old Believers in the Nizhny Novgorod region.

      On June 18, 2026, at 10:55, Incidents Another case of vandalism occurred in the territory of the skits in the Nizhny Novgorod region. Unknown individuals stole copper icons installed by believers in memory of five holy elders. Witnesses reported this in the community "Kerzhaki Old Believers" on "VKontakte."

      A skit is a place of residence for monks or hermits, remote from settlements, often located in forested areas. According to the author, illegal excavations of ancient items are regularly conducted in such territories. It is claimed that representatives from a wide range of professions—teachers, doctors, entrepreneurs, and government officials—are involved in such searches.

      At the same time, according to Russian legislation, conducting work is prohibited on the territories of historical and cultural monuments, cemeteries—tumuli and ancient settlements. Violating these norms entails responsibility.

      It is noted that the material value of the stolen icons is small; however, for the parishioners, they held significant symbolic meaning, being part of religious tradition and a memorial sign. Believers stated that they intend to install new icons in place of the lost ones.

      Another act of cruelty at the skits! These actions are a violation of the law, but human laws are not the most terrible. There are still moral principles and conscience. We will put up new icons, but will these 500-600 rubles make any difference to someone? It is shameful and sad. God is your judge, the author of the appeal wrote.
