Vladimir Putin supported the development of the high-speed rail through Nizhny Novgorod to Kazan.

June 15, 2026 16:37 Society President of Russia Vladimir Putin supported the proposal of the Ministry of Transport to begin preliminary work on the high-speed railway line Moscow - Nizhny Novgorod - Kazan. The issue was discussed at a meeting between the head of state and Transport Minister Andrey Nikitin on June 15, as reported on the Kremlin's website. According to the minister, the department analyzed possible directions for the further development of the high-speed rail network. The routes were evaluated based on several criteria, including travel time reduction, expected passenger flow, investment volume, and economic impact. As a result of this work, the Moscow - Nizhny Novgorod - Kazan route was recognized as the most effective direction. "It provides the maximum economic gain and makes economic sense," Nikitin stated. The minister asked the president to allow the preliminary work on this project to begin, as well as on the Moscow - Minsk line. Vladimir Putin supported the initiative. In addition, the head of the Ministry of Transport noted that in 2028-2029, it is necessary to form a financial model for promising high-speed rail projects and move on to the next stages of their implementation. The Moscow - Nizhny Novgorod - Kazan high-speed rail project has been discussed for more than ten years. It has previously been repeatedly considered as one of the key directions for the development of high-speed rail communication in the country. It was reported that the construction project for the line could be implemented by 2031. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has channels on Telegram and MAX.
