Nizhny Novgorod crafts have maintained demand despite economic difficulties.

      June 15, 2026 17:08 Economy The enterprises of folk arts and crafts in the Nizhny Novgorod region were able to avoid serious consequences of economic difficulties in 2026 as a whole. This was reported by Elena Krayushkina, the general director of the Regional Folk Arts and Crafts Development Fund, to IA "NTA-Volga". According to her, the decline in consumer activity affected many sectors; however, the interest of Russians in national traditions, culture, and historical roots helps maintain demand for folk crafts products. As noted by Elena Krayushkina, some enterprises even report an increase in the number of buyers due to the growing interest in domestic cultural heritage. In her assessment, Nizhny Novgorod crafts are in a more favorable position compared to a number of other regions. This is facilitated by support from the regional government, as well as the implementation of specialized programs and the holding of large event activities. Among them are the "Golden Khokhloma" festival (0+), the "Masters of the Golden Ring" project in Diveevo, and events within the "Capital of Sunsets" project. Such events attract tourists who are eager to purchase products from local producers. "Local products are our crafts. Therefore, such active promotion of our heritage is currently on a significant rise," emphasized Elena Krayushkina. Speaking about the achievements of the industry, she highlighted the holding of the "Handmade" exhibition (6+), the launch of the eponymous internet portal with the support of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia, as well as receiving national status for the award in the field of folk arts and crafts. In addition, the Nizhny Novgorod region is participating in efforts to improve legislation in this area. According to Krayushkina, representatives of the region are involved in preparing amendments to the federal law on folk arts and crafts.
