Nizhny Novgorod region became 13th in the ranking of socio-economic development.
June 15, 2026 08:00 Economy The Nizhny Novgorod region ranked 13th in the rating of the socio-economic situation of the regions of Russia based on the results of 2025, improving its position compared to the previous year. This is evidenced by the results of a study by RIA Novosti. The integral rating of the Nizhny Novgorod region for 2025 was 65.97 points. A year earlier, this figure was at the level of 67.98 points. Despite the decrease in the rating score, the region moved up one place in the final list—from 14th place based on the results of 2024 to 13th. The leaders of the rating, as in the previous year, were Moscow and St. Petersburg, whose integral ratings exceed 90 points. Tatarstan and the Moscow region also scored more than 80 points. The top ten included Sverdlovsk region, Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, Leningrad region, Krasnodar and Krasnoyarsk territories, as well as Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. The authors of the study note that the composition of the leading and trailing groups of the rating has hardly changed compared to the previous year. The top positions are still occupied by large financial, industrial, and raw material regions, while the lower part of the list includes entities with a low level of industrialization and a predominance of agriculture. The last ten in the rating included Nenets Autonomous Okrug, Kabardino-Balkaria, North Ossetia, Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, Karachay-Cherkessia, the Republic of Altai, the Jewish Autonomous Region, Kalmykia, Ingushetia, and Tuva. Compared to the previous year, the composition of the trailing ten changed by only one region. According to experts, in 2025, the dynamics of socio-economic development of Russian regions were mixed. Against the backdrop of a general deterioration in the economic situation, the number of entities with positive dynamics decreased. The value of the integral rating increased for only 44 regions of the country, while it decreased for 41 regions. At the same time, for 19 entities, the decrease exceeded two points. It was previously reported that over three years, the gross regional product in the Nizhny Novgorod region grew by 17%, and based on the results of 2025, it increased by 1.1%. The main driver was the consumption sector. Thanks to high incomes of the population, retail trade turnover increased by almost 5%, said Governor Gleb Nikitin, presenting a report at a meeting of the Legislative Assembly in May.
