Young teachers are increasingly leaving schools in the Nizhny Novgorod region.

Despite support measures and salary increases, educational institutions continue to experience a staff shortage. In the Nizhny Novgorod region, there is a lack of teachers, especially among young specialists. Experts note that graduates of pedagogical universities often choose tutoring, private educational centers, or even change their field of activity altogether. According to the regional Ministry of Education, there are currently about 21,000 teachers working in schools in the Nizhny Novgorod region. Of these, only about 3,200 are under the age of 30. The average staff shortage is estimated at around 500 teaching positions. The most in-demand teachers are those of Russian language, mathematics, and computer science, as well as psychologists, defectologists, and social educators. To attract staff, regional authorities are offering various support measures. Young specialists can receive monthly bonuses ranging from 3,000 to 5,000 rubles, and participants in the "Zemsky Teacher" program are entitled to a one-time payment of one million rubles for working in a rural school. In Nizhny Novgorod, there are also plans to introduce additional payments for students in pedagogical fields and grants for certain categories of specialists. However, the graduates themselves admit that financial support does not always compensate for the difficulties of the profession. One of the reasons for leaving schools is conflicts with students' parents, high emotional stress, and significant responsibility. For example, pedagogical faculty graduate Anna Sedova decided to move to a private children's center after three years of working in a school. According to her, the reason for her resignation was a conflict with the parents of one of her students, after which she preferred to change her workplace while still retaining her profession as an educator. Other specialists choose tutoring. Nizhny Novgorod resident Maria Tormaeva did not take a job at a school after graduating from a pedagogical university and began working on online platforms. According to her, this format allows her to independently set her work schedule and income level. Her earnings now exceed 70,000 rubles per month. Daria Klochkova, deputy director of the Lomonosov Private School, believes that one of the reasons for the staff exodus is the mismatch between the expectations of young specialists and reality. In her opinion, students need to undergo more practical training in schools while still studying to better understand the specifics of their future profession. According to labor market data, about 900 vacancies for teachers and tutors were opened in the Nizhny Novgorod region in the first five months of 2026. The median offered salary was 49,300 rubles. Many specialists with experience in education are considering changing professions or relocating to other regions, most often to Moscow and St. Petersburg. Experts agree that the problem of staff shortages can only be solved comprehensively: by combining financial support, quality training for future educators, and creating comfortable working conditions in schools.
