      On June 10, 2026, at 10:13 AM, Society At the Nizhny Novgorod aeration station, the commissioning of biological wastewater treatment processes is nearing completion after the reconstruction of the first technological phase facilities. According to AO "OKO," the facilities of the first phase are already ensuring wastewater treatment at the level of design indicators.

      According to the chief technologist of NSA, Sergey Lukov, a stable microflora has formed in the five reconstructed aeration tanks, where the main stage of biological treatment takes place, including about 20 species of microorganisms. This positively affects the quality of wastewater treatment.

      "All seven indicators are within the norms of the information and technical reference book on the best available technologies and fully comply with the requirements of the integrated environmental permit," noted Sergey Lukov.

      The specialist also reported that for certain parameters, the treatment results exceed regulatory requirements by more than two times. This was achieved thanks to the implementation of nitrification-denitrification technology, which allows for more efficient removal of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds from wastewater. According to the specialist, this process is significantly more complex than before and largely depends on the automated operation of the new equipment.

      At the same time, the modernization of the dispatching office at the station continues. After the work is completed, information about the functioning of all facilities will be transmitted to a unified control center in automatic mode. Monitors for dispatchers will display data on the operation of pumping equipment, oxygen supply to aeration tanks, and other production indicators. Station employees are already undergoing the necessary retraining.

      The executive director of the "Russian Ecological Movement" and a member of the public council of the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia, Elmurod Rasulmukhamedov, noted that the formation of the required volume of active sludge usually takes from six to nine months. At the Nizhny Novgorod aeration station, this task was accomplished in three months.

      According to him, specialists monitored the parameters of wastewater around the clock and created conditions for the development of bacterial microflora, despite negative temperatures and snowfalls. The final results of stabilizing bacteria over a wide temperature range are expected to be noticeable by the summer of this year.

      It was previously reported that the II phase of the reconstruction of the Nizhny Novgorod aeration station will be completed by 2030.
