Why Movement is Life: Arguments in Favor of Physical Activity

June 8, 2026 10:03 Society The modern lifestyle increasingly forces individuals to spend a large part of the day in a seated position. Working at a computer, using smartphones, driving cars, and a lack of movement are gradually becoming the norm. However, specialists remind us that physical activity remains one of the most important factors in maintaining health and preventing many diseases. The role of movement for the body was discussed by Natalia Savitskaya, the chief physician of the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Center for Public Health and Medical Prevention. Physical activity is considered any muscle work that requires energy expenditure. This is not only about workouts in the gym or sports activities. Benefits to the body come from walking, running, swimming, dancing, working in the garden, active play with children, and even doing household chores. The World Health Organization recommends that adults engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week or at least 75 minutes of high-intensity exercise. Specialists note that regular movement has a comprehensive effect on almost all systems of the body. First and foremost, physical activity helps maintain the health of the cardiovascular system. It strengthens the heart muscle, improves blood circulation, and reduces the risk of developing hypertension, ischemic heart disease, and stroke. The role of movement in controlling body weight is equally important. Regular exercise helps burn calories and prevents the development of obesity, which is one of the risk factors for many chronic diseases.

Physical activity contributes to strengthening muscles and increasing bone density, which is especially important for the prevention of osteoporosis. Specialists pay special attention to the impact of movement on a person's emotional state. During physical exertion, the body produces endorphins, often referred to as "happiness hormones." This reduces stress levels, decreases anxiety manifestations, and improves mood. Additionally, regular exercise helps lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, and arthritis. Moderate exercise also supports the immune system, increasing the body's resistance to infections. Another important effect is the improvement of sleep quality. People who engage in regular movement and physical activity tend to fall asleep faster and have better rest at night. Overall energy levels increase as tissues receive more oxygen, blood supply to organs improves, positively affecting performance and well-being. According to Natalia Savitskaya, physical activity has a noticeable impact on cognitive functions as well. Research shows that movement enhances memory and concentration, stimulates the formation of new neurons, and helps reduce the risk of age-related brain disorders, including dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Furthermore, an active lifestyle fosters creative thinking and enhances problem-solving abilities.

It is sufficient to dedicate 10-15 minutes a day to it, gradually increasing the duration of walks to half an hour or an hour. Additional benefits can come from simple daily habits: opting for stairs instead of elevators, short warm-ups every one to two hours while working at a computer, using a bicycle or scooter for short trips. Dancing can be a good alternative to workouts, and family walks and active games can help combine physical activity with relaxation. Experts emphasize that the main secret to success lies not in sports records but in consistency. To maintain motivation, it is important to choose activities that are genuinely enjoyable. One should start with manageable loads, gradually increasing their volume. It is beneficial to engage in activities with friends or like-minded individuals, track personal progress, and pay close attention to the body's signals. Physical activity has long ceased to be solely an element of a healthy lifestyle or a trendy hobby. Today, it is one of the most accessible ways to maintain health, support good well-being, and improve quality of life regardless of age. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has channels on Telegram and MAX.
