      The Apothecary Garden in the "Evenius House" has opened in Nizhny Novgorod. As reported by the correspondent of IA "NTA-Volga", the opening of the Apothecary Garden in the "Evenius House" took place on June 5 at the address: Studenaya St., 45. It has become the first revived apothecary garden in Nizhny Novgorod, recreating the traditions of healing and gardening from the 18th–19th centuries. As the general director of the Nizhny Novgorod "Regnedvizhimost" KP, Andrey Lachugin, explained, the work began in 2024 with the development of the concept and volunteer clearing of the house. The idea of creating the garden emerged immediately; it is impossible to imagine the work of an apothecary without it. "Since we are carrying out restoration work on the entire house, why not create a garden as well? We have never dealt with gardens before, so we focused on the theme of European gardens. Such regular layouts, very high beds, were usually used back in the Middle Ages, in monasteries," shared Andrey Lachugin. He emphasized that the concept of the courtyard was not limited to strict beds; the space was divided into two parts—a regular garden and an area with a chaotic, "natural" layout, reminiscent of the times when the current Belinsky Street was the outskirts, with fields and meadows. According to project co-author Olga Naumova, the first apothecary Georg-Christian Ludwig Evenius, who arrived in Nizhny Novgorod in 1780, primarily focused on planting the garden. Apothecaries of that time were very creative individuals; some worked with minerals, others with plants, and others with animals (for example, from horns). They actively exchanged recipes and possessed extensive libraries. "Well, the emergence of this garden is completely natural because there could not be an apothecary in Russia—and not only in Russia, but also in Germany—without an apothecary garden," she clarified. The landscape architect Natalia Malysheva was responsible for the garden's content development. A whole range of factors was considered when selecting plants, from the availability of seedlings in nurseries to aesthetics and useful properties. The garden features about 30 species of plants, including several varieties of thyme. "There are no useless plants in nature. Even poisonous ones help the body in small quantities. We selected plants to ensure they were beautiful and bloomed at different times: mint, thyme, lemon balm, monarda (smelling of bergamot), lavender," she emphasized. Project co-author Nikita Gamzyul shared that there are no reliable records of what the house and garden looked like during Nikolai Venius's time; there are neither blueprints nor photographs. "We can only guess. That is why the team chose a strategy of not historical reconstruction, but 'conservation of the object.' We did not stick historical wallpaper, which again we do not know how it looked; we chose quite neutral colors because we ourselves do not know what color we were: both the living room and the room," he noted.
