VTB named five industries for the large-scale implementation of biometrics.

      June 2, 2026 12:05 Society In the coming years, biometric technologies will become part of everyday services in transportation, education, retail, hospitality, and medicine. This forecast was made by Olga Skorobogatova, the First Deputy President and Chairwoman of the VTB Management Board, ahead of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2026). According to a bank survey, 45% of Russians are already ready to use biometrics instead of a passport. The bank participates in pilot projects both as a collector of biometric data and as a developer of ready-made commercial solutions. Services are currently being tested in several areas:

      - Air and rail transport - registration and boarding without presenting a passport;

      - Education - identity verification during remote exams;

      - Retail - automatic age verification of buyers;

      - Hospitality - simplified check-in and service.

      In the future, biometrics may also appear in healthcare: for making doctor appointments, conducting telemedicine consultations, as well as when purchasing prescription and subsidized medications and medical devices. "Biometrics opens fundamentally new opportunities in everyday services, where it can simplify familiar operations, guarantee security, and provide additional benefits to clients. Biometrics is becoming that 'common thread' between various spheres of life, linking and simplifying digital services - from transportation access to benefits and personalized services, making interactions fast, secure, and seamless," said Skorobogatova. She added that VTB is ready to develop standard and non-standard solutions and service models for clients and participate in their implementation. According to a VTB survey conducted in May 2026 among 1,500 adult residents of cities with populations over 100,000, 45% of respondents are ready to replace their passport with biometrics. The most in-demand scenario was age verification - chosen by 50% of respondents. This is followed by payment or access in transport (46%), purchases in stores (40%), benefit verification (37%), identification via video call (24%), and document signing (23%).
