A new tunnel boring machine purchased in China has been given a female name. It will be called Yevdokiya, and soon it will depart from the dead ends of the "Gorkovskaya" station towards Freedom Square in Nizhny Novgorod, as reported by the "Metro NN" public page. This choice is due to the fact that metro builders sought to uphold the tradition of preserving cultural and historical heritage and to pay tribute to outstanding individuals associated with local history. Thus, the name of the great princess Yevdokiya Dmitrievna appeared—daughter of the Grand Duke Dmitry Konstantinovich of Suzdal-Nizhny Novgorod. At the same time, the tradition of naming shields after female figures in honor of the patroness of underground work, Saint Barbara, has emerged relatively recently. Usually, complexes are named after famous people, celebrated workers, and even film heroines. Metro builders strive not to repeat names and each time choose unique titles.
It is worth noting that Yevdokiya Dmitrievna is also known as the Blessed Euphrosinia of Moscow (in monasticism). In 1366, her father married Yevdokiya to the Moscow prince Dmitry Ivanovich, who later entered history as Dmitry Donskoy. This marriage was not just a family union—it ended a prolonged feud between Moscow and the Suzdal-Nizhny Novgorod principality and symbolized the reconciliation of two powerful princes. Yevdokiya Dmitrievna lived with Dmitry Donskoy for 22 years, and their marriage was happy. After her husband's death in 1389, she became the de facto ruler of the Moscow principality. Yevdokiya was distinguished by her education and was considered one of the most enlightened women of her time. Thanks to her, many churches and monasteries were built in Moscow and other cities of Rus.
