"Rostelecom" has presented the first fully domestic solution for smart TVs.
On May 18, 2026, at the CIPR-2026 conference, Rostelecom presented the first 100% domestic solution for smart TVs based on the operating system (OS) "Aurora." The company also showcased prototypes of smart Russian televisions with pre-installed "Aurora TV" at its booth. The smart TV prototypes were produced by the company "Electra" and are equipped with a domestic digital content protection system against unauthorized use (DRM). The devices come with a version of the "Aurora TV" operating system from the Russian developer "Open Mobile Platform." The company "Restream Media" is responsible for the design and adaptation of the OS for use in smart TVs. The solution incorporates AI tools based on the data infrastructure and "Neurogateway" from Rostelecom, as well as a voice assistant with a recommendation system from the domestic developer Enbisys.
Dariy Khalitov, Deputy President - Chairman of the Board of Rostelecom: "The launch of the fully domestic smart TV project is an example of the synergy of Rostelecom's high-tech assets. With our own Russian platform for smart televisions, we are transitioning to a different paradigm: from attempts to adapt to foreign OS with their limitations to independently creating a new experience for using large screens."
Currently, all smart TVs on the Russian market are based on foreign platforms such as Android, Android Open Source Project (AOSP)*, and others. Consequently, there is access to key components of smart TVs from abroad: processors, memory, screens, content encryption, personal data, and device usage statistics. This makes devices on such OS vulnerable due to the risks of sanctions, external destructive impacts on management systems (blocking or limiting functionality), leaks of sensitive data abroad, and possibilities of undeclared surveillance of users.
"Aurora TV" eliminates the possibility of influencing the functionality of devices from abroad, as all management and control systems are developed and located in Russia. Among the key features and functionalities of the solution are: guaranteed access on the main screen to national content, including free broadcasts of federal channels, even if the TV is not equipped with a digital TV module; easy access to smart TVs for all Russian app and service developers; access to Russian online cinemas; flexible adaptation for solving business tasks (for hotels, cafes, offices, and others); and working with personal data in full compliance with Russian legislation.
In the fall, serial production of smart TVs on the "Aurora TV" OS is planned to be established at "Electra": they will have diagonals ranging from 24 to 55 inches, equipped with high-definition LCD matrices (4K and FHD depending on screen size and price category), voice control, a recommendation system, and an AI assistant on board. "Aurora TV" can be ported to various (including already released) smart TVs. The solution supports customization for manufacturers under the "white label" model.
The use of "Aurora" in domestic smart TVs is another new direction for the development of the OS. In 2025, Rostelecom and OMP, together with partners, presented a prototype of the "Aurora Automotive" platform for domestic automotive manufacturing.
