In Nizhny Novgorod, patients with severe forms of obesity were operated on for the first time at the expense of compulsory health insurance (CHI). Two bariatric surgeries were performed in the first quarter of 2026 at hospitals No. 40 and No. 33. This was reported by the editor-in-chief of the medical publication "Statsionar-Press," Alexey Nikонов, citing the regional CHI fund.
One patient underwent a sleeve gastrectomy, commonly referred to as "stomach stitching." The second underwent a gastro-intestinal combined restrictive-bypass surgery.
It should be noted that bariatric surgery is not a cosmetic procedure, but a life-saving operation. It is performed on patients whose weight directly threatens their heart, joints, and can provoke diabetes. Now such treatment can be obtained under CHI, and a referral can be made by an endocrinologist or surgeon. In 2026, the volumes for conducting such operations are distributed among several medical institutions: the Semashko Regional Clinical Hospital, city hospitals No. 5, No. 33, and No. 40.
