Doctors of the NOKDB honed their skills in neonatal surgery at a master class by a colleague from St. Petersburg.

On May 13, 2026, at 18:01, Society. On May 12, a master class in neonatal surgery took place at the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Children's Clinical Hospital. A total of 18 specialists — pediatric surgeons, anesthesiologists-resuscitators, and neonatologists from several medical institutions in the region — observed the rescue of children with congenital esophageal pathologies. The training was conducted by a doctor of the highest qualification category, a pediatric surgeon from the surgical department of the perinatal center of the Saint Petersburg State Pediatric Medical University, and a member of the Russian Association of Pediatric Surgeons, Roman Ti.

As reported by the NODCB, the master class aimed to practice skills and exchange experiences in treating complex congenital anomalies, such as congenital short esophagus and diaphragmatic hernia. Roman Ti shared his clinical practice with Nizhny Novgorod medical professionals, modern diagnostic methods, and surgical treatment, as well as discussed typical challenges that arise during such interventions.

"Roman Ti's master class was an excellent illustration of how the flagship regional project 'Health Quarter' works. We gain experience directly from leading specialists and can immediately apply it in our work with young patients. It is especially valuable that this is not abstract theory, but an analysis of real clinical cases. The doctor not only demonstrated modern techniques but also shared solutions for non-standard situations that surgeons face in the operating room. Now this knowledge will help our doctors act more confidently when dealing with congenital esophageal pathologies in newborns, which means the quality of care for children will be even higher," said Valery Pazavin, Deputy Chief Physician for Surgery at NODCB.

The regional health ministry reminded that the 'Health Quarter' project is being implemented at the initiative of the Governor of Nizhny Novgorod Region, Gleb Nikitin. It was supported by the Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation, Mikhail Mishustin, and the Ministry of Health of Russia.

The project involves the modernization of two neighboring medical institutions — the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Children's Clinical Hospital and the Research Institute — Specialized Cardiovascular Surgery Clinical Hospital named after Academician B.A. Korolev — and the organization of a closed treatment and diagnostic cycle in a single contour. This work aligns with the goals and objectives of the national project 'Sustained and Active Life.'

Roman Ti shared details about the surgeries that took place. "We performed minimally invasive, laparoscopic surgeries on infants: the first child was only one month old, the second was two months old. Both children had similar diaphragm pathologies, where part of the stomach enters the chest cavity. In such situations, the babies poorly absorb food, which means they do not gain weight. Additionally, the children develop esophageal lesions since the acidic contents of the stomach damage it. The master classes were indeed in demand and, in my opinion, were successful: we managed to perform the procedures in full through our joint efforts," said the doctor.

Roman Ti also announced plans for further collaboration with Nizhny Novgorod colleagues. "We have already invited Nizhny Novgorod doctors to our Pediatric University. We want to demonstrate how we work in our territory with multidisciplinary teams," he concluded.

Let us remind you that the national project 'Sustained and Active Life' is being implemented by the order of the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin. It involves the modernization of polyclinics, outpatient clinics, and feldsher-midwife stations, attracting an increasing number of qualified medical personnel to medical institutions, applying new approaches in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of chronic diseases, improving emergency medical care and rehabilitation systems, developing a network of national research centers, and digitizing the industry to qualitatively increase the life expectancy of the population of Russia.
