A pensioner from Nizhny Novgorod sold her apartment after threats from a fake security officer.

On May 5, 2026, at 20:00, Incidents: Scammers forced a 72-year-old resident of Nizhny Novgorod to sell her apartment and hand over the money to them. This was reported by the press service of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the region. For a month, the woman received calls from an unknown person claiming to be a law enforcement officer. During the conversations, he asserted that a loan was allegedly issued in her name, and the funds obtained were being transferred to an unfriendly country. By intimidating the pensioner with the possibility of being held accountable, the fraudster managed to get her to transfer her personal savings—almost 2.3 million rubles—to a so-called "safe account." Additionally, at the fraudster's instruction, the woman sold her apartment for 7.8 million rubles. She was assured that this money needed to be handed over to a freelance employee. The realization that she had been deceived came to the Nizhny Novgorod resident only after fulfilling all the scammers' demands. A criminal case has been initiated regarding this fact. The police remind that employees of government agencies never require money to be transferred to "safe accounts" or to be handed over to couriers, and urge citizens to be vigilant. Earlier, Nizhny Novgorod residents were informed about a new scam scheme ahead of May 9. NIA "Nizhny Novgorod" has channels on Telegram and MAX.
