Despite their attractive appearance, this plant contains substances that can cause serious health problems, writes the editor-in-chief of MIA "Statsionar-Press," Alexey Nikонов, in his Max channel. The bulbs and stems of the daffodil contain the alkaloid lycorine. For the plant itself, this is a kind of natural protection against pests, fungi, and herbivorous animals. However, for humans, the substance can be dangerous—it can cause vomiting and poisoning. At the same time, scientists are considering lycorine as a promising substance for medicine. It is being studied in the context of research on combating tumors, as well as with some strains of coronavirus and influenza. The juice of the plant also poses a danger. It contains a large number of microscopic crystals of calcium oxalate. These tiny needles can deeply penetrate the skin and cause irritation known as "daffodil itch." The bulbs of the daffodil pose a separate threat. They are often confused with onions, which can lead to severe food poisoning with convulsions and heart damage. Specialists advise taking simple precautions. If you are working with daffodils in the garden or simply cutting them for a bouquet, be sure to wash your hands after contact and avoid touching your eyes. The entry of microcrystals of calcium oxalate onto mucous membranes causes severe irritation, which is compared to the sensation of glass dust entering the skin.
