      Some familiar flowers and weeds in the garden can lead to hefty fines or even criminal charges. This was reported to the "Living in Nizhny" portal by lawyer Irina Pitunova.

      Among the prohibited plants listed in a special government decree are hemp, opium poppy, sage of seers, and three-colored morning glory. According to biologists from Nizhny Novgorod State University, Olga Biryukova and Anna Shestakova, morning glory is often found in Nizhny Novgorod gardens as a decorative vine. Its seeds contain a toxin with hallucinogenic effects.

      The responsibility for growing such plants is serious. If a gardener intentionally planted them, they face Article 231 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation: a fine of up to 300,000 rubles, compulsory labor, or imprisonment for up to two years. A large quantity of morning glory is considered to be just 10 specimens, and an especially large quantity is from 100. If the prohibited plant grew on the plot accidentally, the owner will still have to pay a fine of 3,000 to 4,000 rubles. "The owner is responsible for prohibited plants on their plot, even if they were unaware of them and their legal status. Therefore, it is better to remove any suspicious plants immediately," emphasized Irina Pitunova.
