World Immunization Week

From March 24 to March 30, 2026, the World Immunization Week will take place. This year's campaign slogan is: "Vaccines bring results - for every generation!" Infectious diseases occur when pathogenic microorganisms affect a susceptible organism and can be transmitted from an infected person to a healthy one. Vaccination is the only effective and safe way to create protection against infections. Over the last 50 years, vaccines have saved more than 150 million lives worldwide — and not by chance, but because ordinary people decided to protect themselves, their children, and each other. That's 5-6 lives every minute, every day for five decades. The information campaign of 2026 aims to show how vaccines have reliably protected people, families, and communities for many generations and continue to secure our future.

      Facts about vaccination:

      1. Vaccination saves lives. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), immunization prevents 2 to 3 million deaths worldwide each year from dangerous diseases such as diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, and measles.

      2. Vaccines undergo strict control. Before a vaccine is put into use, it goes through multi-stage clinical trials, and after approval, pharmacovigilance (post-marketing surveillance) continues — this involves monitoring possible side effects.

      3. Vaccination reduces the risk of severe complications and death. Even if a vaccinated person gets sick, the illness usually manifests in a milder form, as vaccination reduces the risk of severe disease progression and its complications.

      4. Herd immunity protects society. Mass vaccination slows the spread of viruses and bacteria, reducing the number of sources of infection among people and decreasing the likelihood of unvaccinated individuals becoming infected.

      5. Vaccination saves money. In 2025, the economic damage from one case of influenza in the average region of Russia amounted to 42,000 rubles. In the Nizhny Novgorod region, the total damage from 23 infectious pathologies amounted to 22 billion rubles, while from vaccine-preventable diseases (whooping cough, measles, rubella, acute hepatitis B) it was only 22.7 million rubles, i.e., 0.1%.

      6. Vaccination is important at any age. Immunity gained in childhood can weaken over time, so adults often require revaccination. This helps to strengthen and prolong protection against diseases for which vaccinations were given in childhood, as well as protect against new strains of pathogens.

In the Nizhny Novgorod region, more than 2.5 million vaccinations and revaccinations are performed annually. Vaccinations can be received at clinics at the place of residence, study, or work for free as part of the National Calendar against 12 infections: tuberculosis, pneumococcal and hemophilic infections, measles, epidemic mumps, rubella, viral hepatitis B, influenza, diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis, and whooping cough.

Additionally, in the Nizhny Novgorod region, certain at-risk categories are vaccinated against tick-borne encephalitis, viral hepatitis A, meningococcal and pneumococcal infections, chickenpox, tularemia, anthrax, and rabies based on epidemic indications at the expense of the regional budget. Information about the availability of these vaccines should be clarified at local clinics.

Vaccinations can also be administered in commercial medical organizations both as part of the National Vaccination Calendar and the vaccination calendar based on epidemic indications, specifically against tularemia, plague, brucellosis, anthrax, rabies, leptospirosis, tick-borne viral encephalitis, Q fever, yellow fever, cholera, typhoid fever, viral hepatitis A, shigellosis, meningococcal infection, measles, viral hepatitis B, diphtheria, epidemic mumps, poliomyelitis, pneumococcal infection, rotavirus infection, chickenpox, hemophilic infection, and the new coronavirus infection. Additionally, vaccinations against human papillomavirus and whooping cough for children over 6 years and adults are available.

Thanks to high vaccination coverage, the spread of several diseases has significantly decreased in the Nizhny Novgorod region. The last case of diphtheria in the region was registered in 2011, and poliomyelitis in 1993. Isolated cases of rubella, measles, and acute viral hepatitis B are registered. Despite periodic increases in whooping cough incidence, the level of morbidity in recent years compared to the pre-vaccination period has decreased hundreds of times.

Check your vaccination status and get vaccinated on time according to your age! Remember, it is easier to prevent a disease than to treat it (Hippocrates)!
